Chic Face Art of Celebrities

Piercings have long had a bad reputation for being intimidating and aggressive-looking; however, in recent years, the fashion industry has seen a resurgence of this particular style of body art especially in the ear and nose areas

On the A/W 2015 runways, Ricardo Tisci sent his models out with their faces bespeckled and bejewelled, and in the September issue of British Vogue, a series of shots taken by Paolo Roversi saw a crop of star-on-the-rise models styled with dramatic piercings on their faces.

Piercings are undoubtedly having a high-fashion moment. Even if you don’t have a plethora of piercings yourself, the red carpets have been teeming with stars sporting twinkling ear cuffs that help to temporarily capture some of the edge that piercings and body art gives. These all show that your face should not be neglected when it comes to adornment. Whilst many simply opt for makeup, piercings help to bring some hardware to your look: it may be too edgy for some, but there are plenty of famous faces from whom we can take a little bit of inspiration.

For years, Rihanna has championed elaborate body art, sporting an impressive number of tattoos and piercings. She has a number of piercings on her lobes, her helix and her tragus that she tops up with additional sparkling cuffs. She also had her ears tattooed with stars, which is a body art theme that she continues to her back, which sees a veritable constellation of stars tumbling down in a spiral. Additionally, Rihanna has invested in the septum piercing trend, which sees her decorating the cartilage in between her nostrils with a host of dramatic and twinkling nose rings. Rihanna uses her host of piercings to give her looks a three-dimensional edge. She is known for pushing boundaries and her adventurous sense of style, which is only enhanced by her use of glamourous and edgy piercings.

Model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne has a number of piercings on her lobes, her helix and her tragus that she frequently decorates with studs and elaborate cuffs. Like Rihanna, she has complemented her piercings with tattoos of diamonds and stars to ensure that her ears are well decorated in a dainty way whilst still carrying some undeniable edge. She took her look one step further recently by adding a clip-on diamond lip ring to her collection of face jewels. This she most famously wore to the opening night of Chanel’s Mademoiselle Privé exhibition at the Saatchi gallery, teaming the glimmering ring with a popping red lip, a choker, pretty dress and bowed kitten heels (shop similar partywear styles at Mary Jane Fashion). Her piercings undoubtedly toughen her look, giving her a vampy twist whether she is dressed casually or for a large event.

Emma Watson may not have as many piercings as Rihanna and Cara, but she still nods to the trend in her own elegant way. She achieves the same decorated effect by looking primarily to ear cuffs. She has been spotted at premieres with a succession of cuffs running around her helix cartilage, and a long cuff that begins at her lobe piercing and extends in a line up the length of her ear. Decorated with sparkling diamonds, the look provides ample edge, but has the added luxury of being only temporary. This is something you can recreate for yourself if you are determined to replicate the face art trend but without completely committing to piercings.

    1. Emma's piercings are clip-ons, so you can probably find similar ones if you want to. :)
