The Face Shop The Therapy First Serum: A Lightweight And Hydrating Serum Perfect For Summer!

The Face Shop The Therapy First Serum

Summer is the time to rethink your skincare routine and focus on lightweight and hydrating products. This year, a popular Korean road shop brand The Face Shop, released 2 new skincare products in their The Therapy line, that seem to be specifically made for these hot and humid summer days ahead. First item out of the 2, that I was lucky enough to obtain, is The Face Shop The Therapy First Serum, which I will review in more detail today.

The Face Shop The Therapy First Serum Review

Description: This first-step anti-aging serum contains a blend of French sea water and natural essential oils. It has many benefits, including intense hydration and gentle exfoliation as well as anti-aging effects.

Volume: 130ml

How to use: After cleansing, pump once or twice and apply onto skin gently. For extra benefits, use with The Therapy Green Tea Cotton Pads (included in the package).

That's the packaging my serum first came in.

And here's what was inside: the serum + another box with 30 cotton pads.

Ingredients: Water, Propanediol, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat, Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Sea Water, Santalum Album (Sandalwood) Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Cymbopogon Martini Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Rosa Damascena Flower Extract, Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Oil, Avena Sativa (Oat) Meal Extract, Honey Extract, Adenosine, Xantham Gum, Gellan Gum, Hydrolyzed Algin, Sucrose, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Citrate, Calcium Lactate, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance. (View on CodDNA).

This serum contains a good amount of essential and herbal oils in addition to sea water, which already provides several skin benefits on it's own. Sandalwood oil, avocado oil and cymbopogon martini oil are all known for fighting the signs of aging, but also help with other skin issues like scars, dryness and sebum production. Many of the ingredients in this serum also have anti-inflammatory qualities.

What is more, The Face Shop states on the packaging of this product that "instead of being rapidly mixed, the ingredients are slowly added by hand and stabilized into natural polymers".

Despite the fact that there are so many oils in this serum, the consistency itself isn't oily at all! Which in my opinion is good, but also a bit concerning as the concentration of the ingredients might be too small.

However, after observing the bottle very closely, I was able to notice small particles of oil well mixed into the fluid, which means the actual concentration of oils can't be that small after all. Unfortunately, this sensational discovery was not easy to photograph, especially because the bottle is mostly made out of frosted glass, so you just have to take my word for it, okay?

I always find anti-aging benefits a bit difficult to verify. A plumped and hydrated skin automatically looks more youthful, so it's hard to say whether this serum also delivers a long-term effect. Nonetheless, seeing how I currently have less than 1/3 of it left, it's pretty clear that I've been using it a lot, well past the 2-4 week testing period. In fact, along with my aloe vera gel, it's one of the few skin care products that I'm about to finish so quickly after obtaining, so that must mean something.

By the way, the bottle also has a measuring table on it's side, which is pretty cool.

As you might have already guessed, the serum itself is a transparent runny liquid that is just a bit thicker than water. It absorbs and dries down very quickly, probably thanks to alcohol denat, which can be found at the beginning of it's ingredient list. If your skin is sensitive to alcohol, please reconsider using this product. However, if you don't have a known sensitivity to alcohol, having it present here could be a good thing - to help maximize the absorption of everything else.

I have been using The Face Shop The Therapy First Serum for more than a month now and here's what I've observed:

It delivers an immediate hydrating effect, but feels very lightweight at the same time, which is why I've really enjoyed using this product. It leaves no residue behind, but does give a healthy glow to my skin. As I already said, the anti-wrinkle benefits of this serum were a bit hard to verify, but my skin definitely looks plump and radiant, even thought I haven't been using much else!

My only con for it is that it's quite strongly scented and also has a hint of alcohol to it. (I think.) I'm not really that good at describing and identifying scents.

Anyway, you'd think this already lengthy review is about to end here, but no, I still haven't showed you the cotton pads that were inside the package!

The Face Shop The Terapy Green Tea Cotton Pads

Description: Soft 100% cotton pads coated with finely milled natural jade stone and green tea powder that mildly exfoliate skin.

Honestly, I never knew a pack of cotton pads could be this exciting! I loved using these to apply the serum and I'd like to order more, but I'm not sure where they can be purchased. I actually placed an order on Ebay and got a refund, because apparently they were out of stock.

EDIT: Right now they are sold at Ebay for $5.69!

Overall, my experience with The Face Shop The Therapy First Serum has been a positive one. It feels very refreshing and is perfect for summer. The scent I can also live with - it's a bit strong, but nothing too odd.

The good: anti-aging, super-lightweight, hydrating, makes skin nice and glowy.

The bad: Strongly scented, contains alcohol - may not suit for everyone.

Are you using any anti-aging serums right now?

  1. This looks like a really interesting product. I already have a toner with sea water in it and I love it, so this might be something I should check out. Plus those cotton pads are amazing! Thank you for the detailed review, and the beautiful pictures. Side note: your nails are fantastic!

    1. If you feel like this would work for you, then I'd recommend giving it a try! And these cotton pads were really on a whole another lever, perfect for applying skin care. :)

  2. Those are some interesting cotton pads! Do you think they're worth the extra $ or do they work similarly the same as normal cotton pads? :O

    1. I think they work wonderfully for applying products! Normal cotton pads are usually designed to take products off, not apply them. I also appreciate the exfoliating function as I'm too lazy to exfoliate separately. 😃
